Uzi Rotstein, inspector in the The Prevention Unit at Israel Antiquities Authority, displays coins dating from the Late Roman period, one of a number of artifacts seized from antiquities dealers, at his office in the central city of Bet Shemesh on December 16, 2021. - The Israel Antiquities Authority believes that ancient artifacts seized from antiquities dealers were spoils taken in battle by Bar Kokhba rebels fighting Roman soldiers. Investigation into those involved in the case raises the suspicion that the finds were looted from a hiding complex in the Judean foothills that served as a refuge during the Bar Kokhba Revolt. They include two ornate 2,000-year-old bronze censers that were used to burn ritual incense and probably belonged to affluent Roman houses and temples. A bronze jug for serving wine was also recovered. The vessel bears a depiction of a Roman banqueting scene showing a reclining figure holding a jug of wine.
