Un inverter, detto anche Variable Speed Drive (VSD, variatore di velocità) è un dispositivo elettronico alimentato direttamente dalla rete elettrica, studiato per variare la frequenza e l’ampiezza della tensione di alimentazione di un motore elettrico asincrono trifase. Grazie a un sofisticato controllo, l’inverter è in grado di variare anche la velocità di rotazione del motore stesso. L’impiego di questi dispositivi è vario, poiché generalmente sono pensati per garantire massima efficienza energetica affiancata a ottime prestazioni.
