This temp sensor is used to send coolant temp data back to the engine computer. The ECU uses this data to set cooling system performance, as well as fuel and ignition mapping. A bad sensor will send incorrect data back to the ECU and will result in poor engine performance and worse fuel economy. There should also be a corresponding fault code and check engine light or you might notice erratic gauge readings.
